MAXQDA is a data analysis technology. This technology is designed for computer-assisted qualitative and mixed methods data, text, and multimedia analysis in academic, scientific, and business institutions. There are three editions of MAXQDA: Standard, Plus, and Analytics Pro. This entry covers all three editions. This book provides ten case studies with concise real-world examples illustrating how MAXQDA is used in practice. In each research example, the authors present their way of using MAXQDA, addressing a variety of practical questions, such as how the coding system was developed, how coded documents were analyzed, what tools were used, and how those tools informed the results. Description: MaxQDA Plus is a software tool for qualitative data analysis. It is a state-of-the-art instrument for professional text analysis. MAXQDA Plus contains the add-on MAXDictio, a fully integrated software for dictionary-based content analysis. NVIVO, MAXQDA, ATLAS.TI, Dedoose: a brief comparison EDIT : PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS COMPARISON & TIER REPRESENTATION IS OUTDATED DUE TO RECENT SOFTWARE UPDATES AND NEW VERSIONS. AT THIS POINT, IT REPRESENTS A HISTORICAL SNAPSHOT.
MAXQDA 11 provides a simple interface and intuitive tools to handle qualitative and mixed methods analysis, tabulated panes, interrogation and mapping functions are applicable to multiple data media. MAXQDA plus includes the full range of tools, including mapping and content analysis tools
Getting started in MAXQDA.
As you will see in the subsequent pages – there are various types of data which can be imported and some of them are auto-processed as they are imported.
- You can create an empty project and later copy or import data
- You can import a spreadsheet of mixed quantitative and qualitative data and the software auto-processes the information on import.
As with other MAXQDA step by step options written by Graham Hughes and Stefan Radiker they have oriented exercises around the case study B data (Financial Downturn). They provide a selection of ideas for analytic actions using focus group data and survey data froma spread sheet. Note that once you are working in a software ‘project’ there is no clear linearity or set sequence in the way things have to be achieved though exercises are related to each sequenced Chapter. See Download area for data and working projects.
In Chapter 5 to help get you started, we talk about productive things you can do in the early stages of setting up a ‘project’ in software. Experimenting with these processes where relevant in your chosen software will help to become familiar with useful entities in the software. We keep the subject matter of other chapters in mind as the step by step tasks in these pages get deeper into the interpretive and interrogation processes of analysing different media. Varied approaches to qualitative data analysis inform how we discuss the functions of software. Get Started!

This comparative table is most useful for people who have already worked with one of the programs, or who are familiar with the general functionality of QDA software. Please note that this table will not tell you which is the ‘best’ program. I am comparing some important features & design elements along the lines of the main areas in which QDA software can help you with: Organization of data, annotation, searching, and export/display. While I try to keep this list up-to-date, updates and version changes may not be reflected immediately in this list. Comprehensive comparisons of different packages can be found on the CAQDAS Networking Project’s website.
This table does not contain comparisons of teamwork/collaborative functionality; a separate guide on this topic will be available soon. It is important to mention that Dedoose and the NVIVO server version allow for simultaneous access to project files; MAXQDA, ATLAS.TI and the standard version of NVIVO do not offer this.

The PDF now also contains a brief overview that ranks the software in different categories.
